How we pick the winner

No spinning a wheel behind closed doors. Every main winner is decided by a public event that nobody can predict or control - not even us. Here it is in plain English.

The one-line version

Before entries close, we lock in a public result that hasn't happened yet - like this Saturday's National Lottery numbers. When those numbers come out, they point to exactly one ticket. That's your winner. Nobody can know it in advance, and nobody can change it afterwards.

1

We lock it in first

Before the competition closes, we tell everyone which public result will decide it - say the National Lottery draw on a set date. It hasn't happened yet, so nobody can know the outcome - us included.
2

Entries close

The timer ends and the full list of tickets is locked and public. Nothing can be added, removed or changed.
3

The result picks your winner

The lottery is drawn. Those numbers point to one ticket on the list - and that person wins. Simple as that.

Want to double-check? (optional)

Every finished competition has a Verify button. Tap it and your own phone or laptop re-does the whole thing from the public numbers and confirms it lands on the same winner we announced. Prefer to just trust the maths? That's completely fine - it works the same either way.

The technical bit (for anyone who wants the exact maths)

To turn the public result into a ticket, we run it through SHA-256 - a standard, one-way calculation - take part of the answer as a number, and use it to count to a position in the sorted list of tickets:

index = abs( int32( first 8 hex of SHA-256(seed) ) ) mod (total entries)
winner = entries sorted by ticket number, at that index

SHA-256 is the exact same calculation your browser and our database both run, so the answer is identical for everyone. That's what makes it checkable rather than “trust us”.

What about instant wins?

Some prizes are tied to specific ticket numbers set before the competition opens - match one and you win it the instant you enter. A few of the bigger instant prizes only unlock once enough tickets have sold; if one would be won too early it simply moves to a later ticket. It's all spelled out here and in our Terms & Conditions.

Skill-based & free to enter

Every competition asks a genuine skill question, and there's always a free postal entry route with the same chance of winning - no purchase necessary. That's what keeps these prize competitions of skill, not a lottery.
